Abnormal Bleeding

The average Menstrual cycle will last for 3 to 7 days. The Menstrual cycle is considered normal if it occurs anywhere from every 21 to 35 days. Cycles that last for more than 7 days or that occur more often than every 21 days are definitely abnormal and should be evaluated. In addition, if you have to use Tampons and Pads at the same time, or if you have accidents, or if you soak a Tampon or Pad more often than every two hours regularly then evaluation in the office is necessary. If women experience significantly heavier bleeding in their 40’s or if they are Anemic (Low Iron) they should be evaluated. Any bleeding after Menopause is considered Abnormal.

Abnormal bleeding is generally evaluated by History and Physical exam. Quite commonly we also need to draw bloodwork and consider ordering a painless Ultrasound. In certain situations we will recommend an Endometrial biopsy. This is a brief office sampling of the lining tissue inside the Uterus. Although only taking 20-30 seconds this procedure can cause cramping. Once the cause has been determined then we can discuss treatment options. These range from Medical therapies to minor procedures such as Endometrial Ablation all the way up to surgeries for more complex situations.
